Wiring an electric motor made easy

The OSA Žilina portfolio includes many types of Siemens electric motors. We offer three-phase and single-phase models, low- and high-voltage variants and models with different voltage ranges. How each motor is installed depends on its design, application and power supply. So how do you wire an electric motor quickly, safely and properly?

Read the rating plate carefully

The manual is not the only important source of information about the motor you have bought. The essentials are on the rating plate of your model. It gives detailed information about the motor type, weight, size (shaft height) and degree of protection. Siemens electric motors state supply data for 50 Hz and 60 Hz on their rating plates. For installation in Europe, the supply data for 50 Hz is what matters. The plate also shows the output and speed in rpm. The voltage data is especially important, because it also indicates how the motor is connected – in star or in delta.

Find the wiring diagram

A common mistake when installing electric motors is wiring them incorrectly. As mentioned above, motors are connected either in star or in delta. The reliable guide is the wiring diagram, which you will find on the inside of the terminal box cover. Do not overlook it – it is different for every motor type.

Installation only under professional supervision

The supply data is printed on the motor itself or given in detailed manuals. Wiring a motor, however, is not a job for laypeople. Electric motors may only be connected by a competent person – a qualified electrician whose competence is defined by regulations and technical standards.

Safety comes first

To avoid any risk when installing an electric motor, there are strict rules in the manual, in the wiring diagram and in generally applicable standards. Stay alert even so. Electric motors are usually supplied without protection, so make sure you provide it. Fuses against short circuit or overload, or motor protection circuit breakers, will help you.
